Coeliacs are people who have the auto-immune disease which causes their bodies to attack its self when gluten is present in their diet. The disease is not contagious.
What is Coeliac Disease?
Coeliac Disease is a auto immune problem in the body. Coeliac is pronounced (see-lee-ak). Coeliacs can't eat gluten, gluten is a protein made up of: Wheat, Flour, Malt, Barley and Rye.
What happens when a Coeliac eats gluten?
It depends how much they have eaten, normally if it's a lot then it can be in the system for about 3 days. Their stomach would have a small sharp pain sometimes and it would be quite painful if anyting tight is on it. Even only one meal containing gluten can lead to severe pain & being sick. However, the body can also react to gluten very quicky depending on how sensitive you are to gluten, the fastest that I have ever reacted was a few hours.
When going out always ask whether the restaurant has a gluten free menu, most places now have a seperate gluten free menu
